The Franklin Library, a division of The Franklin Mint, was a publisher of fine collector edition books from the early 1970s until 2000. Known for beautiful leather bindings, Franklin Library books were published in three styles - full genuine leather, imitation leather, and quarter-bound genuine leather. The full leather-bound editions were produced throughout the Library's lifespan but the other two styles (imitation and quarter bound) were only published in the 1970s and '80s.
All Editions featured:
-
Raised hubs on the spine
-
High quality paper
-
Pages sewn into the binding, not glued
-
Pages Gold gilded on all sides
Of the three styles in the Franklin Library lineup, the Full-Leather editions were of the highest quality. With the exception of the endpapers which varied from silk moiré to embellished paper, here are the characteristics that remained constant in this style:
-
Bound in full genuine leather
-
Letterings and stampings in 22KT Gold on spine and covers
-
Silk ribbon bookma
The other alternative to the full-leather style are the Quarter Bound Leather editions. This style features a genuine leather spine, but with cloth covered boards. Here are the common characteristics:
-
Silk ribbon bookmarker
-
Embellished endpapers, not silk moiré
-
Full-leather bound spine, cloth covered boards.
